Cognition

The fusion of the Honors program with the Center for the Citizen Scholar resulted in the Cormier Honors College for Citizen Scholars and offers students a comprehensive learning environment filled with academic support and educational services.

You'll experience learning through interdisciplinary and integrative experiences, engage with interesting, expert, and enthusiastic faculty, and develop vital professional skills such as time management, networking, and creativity.

Compassion

During our annual Leadership Retreat, first-year scholars and their mentors participate extensively in service activities on Longwood’s campus and in partnership with organizations in the surrounding Farmville area.

Honors scholars also have the opportunity to participate in a biannual service retreat each semester at Longwood’s Hull Springs in Montross, Virginia. In honor of Mr. Eddie Carrie, Jr., the Hull Spring's longtime groundskeeper, students volunteer in the surrounding Westmoreland County community.

Additionally, the Cormier Honors College offers multiple volunteer service opportunities throughout the year to benefit local organizations, including:

  • Farmville Area Community Emergency Services (F.A.C.E.S.) Food Pantry
  • Elwood’s Cabinet, a food pantry for Longwood students
  • Heartland Horse Heroes
  • Southside Virginia’s American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
  • Town of Farmville
  • Virginia Children’s Book Festival
  • Piedmont Area Veterans Council
  • Clean Virginia Waterways
  • Piedmont Senior Services

Community

Community building is supported through the student planning committee of the Cormier Honors College, the Honors Student Association (HSA).

HSA, serves the campus and community with fun and engaging events, hosts a myriad of social opportunities for all Honors students each semester, including:

  • Cookie decorating parties
  • De-stress events during finals week
  • Biannual service retreats
  • Pizza With Professors
  • Pumpkin decorating
  • Field Day
  • Senior Send-Off

The Honors Student Association is a launchpad for CHC student leaders to get involved on campus and in the surrounding communities.
