The 2025 Reserve of the 1839 Collection—dressed in a striking new silver metallic label—was released in October and has sold out, setting a new Virginia record for the most bottles sold from a single distillery in one day. Due to the overwhelming demand, we plan to continue the partnership and release next year’s limited edition ahead of Homecoming and Alumni Weekend 2026, so watch for an announcement!

The 1839 Collection Story

As plans came together for Longwood’s first Homecoming and Alumni Weekend celebration, we thought about the traditions that bind generations of Lancers together, and how we could celebrate that spirit. What better way with a new spirit that could be shared at Homecoming and Alumni Weekend?

We found a natural partner just five miles down the road in Sandy River Distillery. Mark and Candice Smith, who opened the distillery in 2021, set to work crafting a small batch bourbon that would appeal to Lancers far and near.

Thus, the 1839 Collection was born. Every bottle is infused with the Longwood spirit, down to the Rotunda seal in the Longwood blue wax that seals each cork. Our hope is that you share this single barrel bourbon with friends, family, and Lancers as you create new traditions.
